What is an UltraSonic Facial?
by Janice Moranz, M.D.
I want to tell you about an exciting new technology for facial rejuvenation and the improvement of brown spots. We call the procedure an UltraSonic Facial. The treatment uses a unique combination of electrical energies to stimulate the production of new collagen and to drive topical treatments into the skin. The technology has been previously used for many years for management of ulcers and burns. It has been modified for facial applications. It helps repair damaged skin. The UltraSonic Facial is only available in medical facilities where staff has been trained and works under medical supervision. It is safe for all skin types. It can also be used in conjunction with other procedures, such as chemical peels, and with take home skin care products.
This rejuvenation of the skin is a progressive and noninvasive treatment and does not interrupt busy lifestyles. It is a fitness program for the skin. It can be used for prevention of skin damage. We lose about 1% of collagen a year and the ability to repair skin becomes more difficult as they age. Ultrasound and electrical stimulation are effective in initiating the development of collagen. If these processes can repair ulcers or burns, it can certainly be helpful in preventing and correcting the normal loss of collagen through aging.
There are two special topicals that we use with the treatment. One is called SmartGel. The ingredients in it were selected for specific purposes and contain pigment lighteners, anti-oxidants, collagen stimulants, moisturizers, and sun protectants. The other topical is a strong bleaching agent to lighten brown spots and skin discolorations. Both are more effective than simply applying them to the skin because the ultrasound component helps to drive it in to penetrate it deeper than just topical application. We have also used the UltraSonic facials to improve acne. Theoretically, they may also improve stretch marks and scars. We want to try the treatment for these conditions and see what kind of results we can get. Hopefully the ingredients in SmartGel along with the ultrasound and electrical stimulation will make a difference.
Patients are raving about the results they receive upon completion of a course of four chemical peels alternating with four ultrasonic facials. They use comments like, "it's better than a facelift" and "my skin has tightened up very well." Many say that they felt a difference after just one treatment and started receiving compliments on their skin after just a couple.
The eight-treatment course costs $800. After the course of treatment, a maintenance program is discussed. Some patients want to continue with another series. Others want to continue with treatments ever 2-3 weeks. Some choose to continue with monthly treatments.
There are a few people who have had minimal results. It seems that the best results are in people with resistant brown spots. Rejuvenation of collagen takes longer, and we may see more improvement as more time passes. To schedule a consultation to see if this new treatment (available only in New Mexico at our office) will help you, please call the office at 505-880-1920. All patients are individually evaluated and the best course of action is recommended.
